Ortus Artis 2006: International architecture competition for a garden in cell n.25 of the former Carthusian monastery of Padula.

Cell 25 situated on the southeastern corner of the monastic quarters provides a system of small semi-enclosed canopies to reflect on our ego. Each unit contains a reservoir of natural water inhabited by fish, frogs, and lotus plants [1] surrounded by seats for resting and reflecting. These minute microcosms stimulate thought and emotion of child like memory in an attempt to free us from our self important ego by connecting us to our primordial surroundings. The remaining areas of the garden are left to the parasites, weeds, tall grasses and the like symbolizing the dangers around us and may be trespassed by with willing to find secret areas. The garden is thus a symbol for the fruits of life, memory and fear.

The Ego-System units are to be prefabricated and installed on site. The reservoirs are made of concrete rims and lined with gravel bases contain water filtration systems. The wooden seats and trellis structure allow grape ivy [2] to grow and creates the enclosure protecting areas of the reservoirs and visitors from direct sunlight. The fresh water pools supply the basis for life and naturally cool the spaces. The sun’s energy is transformed into brief moments of illumination [3] throughout the garden in the evenings; furthermore the archaeological remains and aqueduct found in the present garden are protected during the temporary installation of the aforementioned proposal.

Cella n° 25 situate nell angolo sudest del quartiere monastico fornisce un sistema di piccole tettoie semichiuse poste come per riflettere il nostro Ego. Ogni unita contine una vasca con fonti di acqua naturale abitata da pesci rane e da piante di loto [1] intorno alla quale ci si sofferma su sedili per riposare e riflettere. Questi minuti del microcosmo stimolano pensieri e emozioni infantili e la memoria cerca di liberarci dal nostro ego connettendoci con il nostro essere primordiale. L` area restante del giardino e´ lasciata ai parassiti, all´ erbaccia, e all erba alta come a simbolizzare il pericolo intorno a noi, come se questa volesse intrufolarsi abusivamente, con la volontá di scoprire le aree segrete. Il giardino é un simbolo del frutto della vita, la memoria e il timore.

Il sistema di unitá Ego sono prefabbricate e installate poi sul luogo. La vasche sono fatte di cemento armato con la base di ghiaia che contentiene un sistema di fitraggio dell ´acqua. Le strutture di legno e graticcio permettono alla edera [2] di crescere e creano dei recinti che proteggono le aree delle vasche e i visitatori dalla luce diretta del sole. L ´energia solare la sera è trasformata in brevi momenti di illuminazione [3] nel giardino. L ´acquedotto e le parti archelogiche presenti nel giardino sono protette nel periodo in cui sara installata la proposta suddetta.
